Itella Logistics strengthens presence in Norway

Itella Logistics, part of the Finland-based Itella Group (formerly Finland Post Corporation), has signed an agreement to take over the business of Norwegian company Universal Spedisjon Bergen AS.

Itella Logistics stated that after approval of the competition authorities in Norway and completion of the demerger formalities, the Universal Spedisjon business would be transferred completely to Itella Logistics AS, which had been a 50% shareholder of the company for the last few years.

"This strategic acquisition will strengthen our position in Norway as one of the leading logistics operators in the market," claimed Itella Logistics AS managing director Kjell-Arne Eloranta.

"Universal Spedisjon Bergen has successfully developed logistics services within national and international transport, freight forwarding and contract logistics."

Itella Logistics' operations in Norway started in 2006 when it acquired Universal Spedisjon AS in Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger and Trondheim. Its services include a full range of air, sea and road transport, forwarding and contract logistics. The company employs a staff of 130 and posts net annual sales of approximately €62.5m. "Universal Spedisjon AS Bergen has 12 employees, whose positions will not be affected," added Itella Logistics.

Itella Logistics is a leading service logistics provider in northern Europe, with a global presence through partners. Its services include transport services, forwarding, contract logistics and IT-based logistics solutions allowing direct integration with customers' IT systems. The company, which posted net sales of €620m in 2007, employs 4,400 staff in eight countries (Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Russia). In April, Itella announced it was acquiring Russia's leading logistics warehousing group NLC (Ti Logistics Briefing, News, April 29).
